Opus 280, “Homage to Matisse – Flowers”

The decorative-ensemble concept of still-life painting was transformed early in the 20th century by Henri Matisse to a semi-abstract arrangement with planar rhythms all his own. Having familiarized himself with flower/vase combination possibilities from earlier design formats, Cano transforms several parameters here in his own manner of honoring Matisse. From the levitating vase, spatially detached from its patterned background, to the artfully arranged flowers that echo one another in both type and in placement, he manipulates key principles of Modernism, such as a respect for the picture plane and a utilization of linear markings to compound 2-D and 3-D areas. Only after committing to these essential, formalistic distinctions has Cano chosen to surprise us with personal touches like his variable geometry and tiny added pearls.
