Opus 301, “Homage to Monet: The Romantic Pond”

There is an artistic kinship Cano has with Claude Monet, whose attachment to seasonal gardens flourished later in life. This large, color-saturated work is a masterly homage to Monet—though designed and executed in Cano’s own terms. The water lilies and the reflections differ in their presentation: where Monet sought illusive “impressions” utilizing oil on canvas, Cano transforms his vision to add more brilliance and variously defined layers by using enhanced materials of acrylic on Belgian linen. This enables him to combine aspects of seasonal or diurnal light effects in combination, rather than successive versions as with Monet. And at the point of framing, Cano had full control in choosing his perfectly proportioned and decoratively designed antique frame that “complemented the whole composition.”
