The strength of this flower/vase painting resides in its innovative treatments at different levels. A feminine form in “bridal white” characterizes the vase itself as it rests on a ledge-like support, i.e. the base line of the Italian, handmade frame. With a purple background stunningly contrasted to the raised frame’s organic tendrils and beaded borders, the elements in the work appear closely bound to the picture plane. This is further emphasized by the frontal display of flowers above and by dynamic sprays of paint below. Thus Cano’s composition firmly fits the main motifs on all four sides.
