Opus 307, “October Leaves”

In Cano’s work there is an oscillation between the ordered world of forms and the ‘free spirit’ of color and energetic motion found in nature. Opus 307’s inspiration comes from his observation of changing leaves as an autumnal phenomenon. The paint itself duplicates the swirling and mixing of multicolored leaf formations – so hard to distinguish tonally or coalesce in even layers once autumn breezes start to mobilize the fallen foliage. His enhanced colors and fluid textures remind us that paint itself assumes robust overlays of shifting combinations – as Cano emphasizes by allowing the edges of his composition to hover free of their neutral background.
