Opus 321, “321”

This striking, semi-abstract composition is played-out in a manner reminiscent of a standardized profile portrait, yet freely interpreted as ‘mask-like’ or even free-form. In point of fact, Cano has taken a subdued purple/lilac background, and developed the most expressive painterly dynamics within a humanoid likeness steeped in red for maximum tonal contrast. These ‘filaments’ of colored brushstrokes also cause a blue-swirl above to appear as if gushing out… [jointly] providing energy and zest that adds to a certain haunting spirit captured in suspended ‘eyes’ plus firm black marks. There can be no resolution, though a gray-banded black frame offers containment.
