Opus 287, “Lady in the Blue Hat”

Different versions of a primary subject appear in Cano’s work over time, as testified to by Opus 287, Lady in the Blue Hat. It references a cool, aloof female in a sundress and wide-brimmed hat that infer a midday moment of silent reflection. Her identity remains a mystery, since she is not pinpointed as at a particular event. Unlike her more formally attired alter ego in Opus 270, she combines subtle blues with a casual band of flowers—as Cano leaves us wondering if she is the same person in different circumstances or an example of artistic license that fits the same model into contrasting apparel which urges one to seek further points surrounding her half-obscure features.
