Opus 304, The Girl in Yellow

As a decidedly complex and haunting image, the work provokes heightened interest by presenting in the foreground a lonely protagonist who stands before a flowering bush – yet suggestive of so much more!   Is the neatly-dressed girl coming to terms with her budding life, “compressed” into a narrow garden’s orderly surroundings? Cano invites us to “use our imagination” so as to reconcile what’s in her mind with what looms before her. The bold colors of foliage and flowers stand in contrast to the softer tonality of her simply modeled outfit, so a darker frame seems in order.
