Opus 299, “Augustus”

A lengthy, abundantly fulsome design in constricted space characterizes this flower and vase painting. Cano has developed a mastery in applying “acrylic skins” of malleable color appliques. The blue vase subtly flattens itself by means of a crisscross pattern, while the tendrils and leaves depart from the bouquet itself just as a shower of tiny white or black bits rise and fall around the buoyant floral display. A classic gold frame, with progressive steps going outward in this instance, makes the entire piece a stable unit—approachable yet hardly “real” with its purplish backdrop.
